Skittles Vodka - A Sweet Vodka Treat
If you've never tried this wonderful treat during one of your (many) drunk nights at Babson, now's the time. "Skittles vodka" can be tricky to make, but the end result makes up for it. You end up with a very sweet drink that does not taste alcoholic - in other words, you can get totally wasted without knowing it (and without spending a lot of money!)
Caution: For anyone out there that's going to do this, be warned. Don't just gulp down glasses of this stuff because you can't taste the vodka - it's in there! Also, do not drink this if you are not yet 21 years of age! Actually this site does not condone drinking at all, so this how-to is provided for informational and humorous purposes only.
That said, here's how to make the stuff:
Start out by getting the two necessary ingredients: a cheap bottle of vodka and a big bag of Skittles candy. This bottle of vodka cost $8.50 for a liter and it tasted like rubbing alcohol - and it worked out great!
Make two piles of Skittles. One pile should be red, orange, and yellow, and the other is for the green and purple candies. You can do different combinations, but I prefer to leave out the green Skittles (they're sour) and the purple Skittles (they'll make the drink brown.)
Empty some vodka out of the bottle to make room for the Skittles. Then put a couple handfuls of the red, orange, and yellow Skittles into the bottle. Feel free to adjust proportions as necessary. You can either save the extra vodka to put back in this bottle after you take out the Skittle leftovers, or you can try to mix a bit of "vodka sour" with the green skittles.
It won't take long for the Skittles to melt in the vodka. Give the bottle a little shake in a few minutes and it should be reddish-orange.
Then let it sit for 4 days. That should be enough time for the Skittles taste to overpower the vodka. You can test it by smelling the vodka - when the smell of alcohol is gone, it's ready.
Now is the hard part. You've got to get all the Skittles sugar chunks out of the bottom and skim the crap off the top.
First, pour the vodka into a second container. Then fill the first bottle with hot water to loosen the Skittles sludge on the bottom. After it sits for a few minutes it should rinse clean. But before the Skittles vodka goes back in, it needs filtered.
You can try a metal strainer to get the bigger stuff, then use a coffee filter or even a thin, clean kitchen towel to filter out the smaller stuff. You can try leaving some of the thicker sugar in the bottle (since it's hard to filter) and just shake the bottle before serving. The drink won't look as dark or clear that way, but it will still taste pretty good.
Now it's ready to chill and serve, or to be filtered again if you want.
Here is the vodka after a bunch of the crap was filtered out. I put it in the fridge for a few days which let the deep red vodka separate from any leftover Skittles crap. It's about as good as it will get, so drink up!
But remember, even though it tastes like a mixed drink, it's basically straight vodka!
