The Map Hill Elevator Saga 3

Evening All,

I wanted to take a moment and update everyone on the final bill regarding the repairs to the elevator. At this point as no relevant information has been brought forward and as I have communicated in the past consistent with our College policy regarding hall damage, the entire hall will unfortunately share in these costs equally. Given the damage occurred past 9pm on that evening, the individual(s) who vandalized the elevator were either Map Hill residents or let into the hall by residents. I certainly appreciate the few ideas brought forward concerning minimizing damage in the future, but it does not impact the repairs that were needed to correct the problems from February.

That said, the final bill equates to $95.08 per resident. Please understand this amount also reflects a substantial discounted labor fee which is attributable to the diligence and abilities of our Facilities Services staff who were able to save $35.73 per resident.

I certainly hope everyone will be more conscience of who is in our hall at all times and of course, confront anyone damaging anything in the hall. As we talked during our hall meeting shortly after Spring Break, we all need to be aware of our environment and especially with the recent happenings at Virginia Tech, I think that concept becomes more and more evident despite the horrific circumstances of this past Monday. We continue to live in a world without walls and even when you leave Babson, such awareness will always be important for your each of lives going forward.

As I mentioned before, if you’re not comfortable confronting a particular person, suite or situation, always be sure to call Public Safety at x5555. Our failure to report such instances in the future, assuming we are present to observe such possibilities, may only result in our community paying for the negligence of others.

While many of you have a great number of things on your minds such as completing classes, graduation, future employment, summer plans, moving home and/or moving to a completely new city, please take some time to reflect on this and if you do have any information related to this damage, please be sure to let your RA, Public Safety or myself know (and anonymous information is completely fine as well such as notes under doors or calling the anonymous TIPS line at 781-237-8164).

Are you serious? $95 a person? That's brutal. That means it cost us about $12,000 to fix the elevator. Actually, we had a $35 discounted labor fee, so really it was more like $16,000 or more. Did we hire Bob Vila to put in the new console or what? I want to see receipts. Not to mention, what ever happened to the downtime from manufacturer defects? We should see a refund for that. Wasn't the last elevator quote like $5,000? How did that more than triple?

Plus, I logged a few hours as dorm cop recently, and I charge $20 an hour plus benefits, so I think you guys actually owe me in the end. In fact, I need to report a suspicious person. There's this 35 year old guy that's always hanging out in our college dorm, usually on the first and third floors, and statistically he's just as likely as anyone else living on this campus to start destroying property or people, so why shouldn't I report him? Maybe because this school and dorm is generally a safe place, and there isn't anywhere in the world that is immune to things like this every once in a while, so it isn't something that should be pushed onto the students.

But if we're all forced to pay this absurd fee, you need to pay it out of your own pocket, as well. You are just as guilty as anyone else living here for not having prevented the destruction. But aren't our handicap doors still broken? It seems to me they still keep getting stuck wide open. So maybe instead we should charge whoever is responsible for not fixing them some of the bill since anyone in the world can just stroll on in here whenever they please.

Oh, that's right, it's not their fault either, it's mine. I'm not supposed to be working or enjoying my life in any form, I'm supposed to be sitting in the lobby with my laptop doing background checks on everyone that comes in the door. Or as I walk through the halls I should probably call the cops on anyone that looks, acts, or sounds different than me because that must mean they are coming into Map Hill with the sole intention of settling a personal grudge against our elevator.

That's great because I was just thinking that we have way too much school spirit and class unity on this campus, and I was hoping someone would think of a good way for us to alienate each other, so nice work. And I'm also glad our camera-in-the-elevator or the charge-everyone-on-campus suggestions got thrown instantly into the garbage. Way to put in some elbow grease for our cause. I love the communication on this campus.

Whatever, I'm done with this. It's a shame that we get this nice slap in the face on our way out of Babson. It's not surprising only 15% of the senior class has donated for the senior gift. My gift is 1/124 of a Bob Vila elevator console, so have fun with that. Thankfully other administrators see the big picture around here, and hopefully they can help us out, or at least help other classes after us so they can enjoy a real college experience and not just one page after another of our beloved student handbook.
